New genetic identification and characterisation of 12 Algerian sheep breeds by microsatellite markers

Abstract: Exposition of variations between breeds is very important for genetic diversity. Determination of this variation is needed to reveal population structure and relationship between populations and planning national breeding and conservation programmes. This study was carried out in 296 animals from 12 different local sheep breeds (Barbarine, Ouled Djellal, Ifilene, Srandi, Darâa, Rembi, Berbere, Taâdmit, Hamra, Sidaou, Tazegzawt and D'men) reared in different regions of Algeria. Fifteen microsatellite markers we… Show more

“…A similar result was found by Gaouar et al (2014), (F st = 6.1 %), who studied the genetic admixture of North African ovine breeds based on six STR loci (Gaouar et al, 2014). The F st value was considerably higher than both the F st values previously reported by Ozerov et al (2008) and that of Algerian sheep breeds (Gaouar et al, 2015;Abdelkader et al, 2017).…”

“…In spite of this, this indicator of Kazakh Arkhar-Merino was still higher than those of some native Chinese sheep breeds (Guang-Xin et al, 2016) as well as eastern Adriatic and western Dinaric native sheep breeds (Salamon et al, 2014). The average mean of the observed heterozygosity was less than the mean of expected heterozygosity in the whole population; this could be due to selection against heterozygosity or inbreeding (Abdullah et al, 2013;Carmen et al, 2007). Thus, according to the comparison results of the investigated populations, the genetic variability in the Kazakh Arkhar-Merino population was identified as being lower than in the others.…”

“…Overall H T described as Nei's gene diversity value was 0.91 which was higher than the values obtained from Algerian native sheep breeds (Ameur Ameur et al, 2018), Turkish native sheep breeds (Yilmaz et al, 2015) and Albanian native sheep breeds (Hoda and Marsan, 2012) This finding supported Na and PIC values is an indication that goats have a high genetic diversity of populations studied.…”

“…Autosomal microsatellites are a well-known effective and powerful tool to investigate genetic structure and diversity have been widely used in sheep breeds, in all over the world, for Turkish sheep breeds (Koban, 2004;Gutiérrez-Gil et al, 2007;Yılmaz and Karaca, 2012;Cemal et al, 2013;Yilmaz et al, 2014) and for the Algerian sheep breeds (Gaouar et al, 2014;Gaouar et al,2015;Gaouar et al,2016a;Ghernouti et al, 2017;Ameur Ameur et al, 2018).…”

The first step for a well-structured and sustainable animal breeding and conservation program is to reveal detailed information on intra and inter-breed genetic diversity.…”
