New frontiers in couple-based interventions in cancer care: refining the prescription for spousal communication

Abstract: Background: The diagnosis and treatment of cancer is a life-altering experience that signals profound changes in a person's life. However, most people do not experience cancer in isolation or cope alone. Despite the fact that partners (i.e. spouses, significant others) provide emotional support and play a critical role in caregiving, cancer exacts a heavy toll on them and challenges their relationship with the patient by altering established communication patterns and roles. In recognition of this, a burgeonin… Show more

“…The current study strongly contributes to the dyadic science of cancer by supporting previous research on the importance of focusing on the dyad as the unit of analysis and care, 5,6,29,[33][34][35][36][37] and highlighting the need to examine the heterogeneity we know exists across cancer dyads and the challenges we face when striving to optimize dyadic health. With increasing calls for interventions to be more targeted, our approach uncovers ways to conceptualize differential risk across dyads.…”

“…Clinicians should include partners in designing their interventions, with the goal of fostering open and constructive communication in the couple . In that way, patients may be better able to clarify their needs and partners may learn to be more attuned to these needs, thus improving the quality of received support and of the overall relationship . Of importance would be to train partners to be more sensitive to the needs of the patients to avoid engaging in overprotectiveness, a common characteristic of the Greek family .…”
