Sex-dispersal differences of four phloem-feeding vectors and their relationship to wild-plant abundance were analyzed over 2 yr in two vineyard agroecosystems. Adults of Euscelis lineolatus Brullè, Neoaliturus fenestratus (Herrich-Schäffer), Psammotettix alienus (Dahlbom), and Hyalesthes obsoletus Signoret were sampled by using yellow sticky traps at two heights (20 and 150 cm) above the ground in a regular geo-referenced grid. Wild vegetation was surveyed around each sampling point. The most abundant species collected was N. fenestratus, followed by P. alienus, H. obsoletus, and E. lineolatus. Low traps were more effective in capturing the females of N. fenestratus and P. alienus and the males of all of the species, except N. fenestratus at one site. Sex ratio was male-biased for N. fenestratus in both agroecosystems at both trap heights, and only in low traps for H. obsoletus and P. alienus at one site. Insect abundance, temporal population dynamics, and dispersal patterns showed considerable fluctuations according to vineyard agroecosystems and years. In the current study, all of the four phloem-feeding vectors were not found homogeneously in the vineyards, and they were aggregated in correspondence with their herbaceous wild-plant hosts. Insects tended to disperse from the borders toward the vineyard, or vice versa Colonizing pattern was strongly affected by border vegetation, fallow fields, and vineyard ground-cover vegetation. Different plant communities were identified inside the agroecosystems, and significant correlations among insect and plant-species abundances were recorded. Data highlight the importance of understanding the dispersal patterns of vector species for the application of correct integrated pest-management strategies.

Phytoplasmas are cell wall‐less phytopathogenic bacteria which are associated with a disease in Rubus species known as Rubus stunt. Symptoms range from stunting, witches’ broom, small leaves, short internodes, enlarged sepals, phyllody and flower proliferation to fruit malformations. Phytoplasmas can be spread by vegetative propagation and by phloem‐feeding insect vectors. However, little is known about the spectrum and distribution of putative Rubus stunt insect vectors. In this study, a screening of putative insect vectors of Rubus stunt in raspberry plantations in southern and northern Germany was carried out during two successive years (2014 and 2015) with multiple sampling dates throughout the growing seasons. A total of 2,891 hemipteran insects were sorted, identified to family, genus or species level when possible, and a subset of 319 DNA samples containing a sum of 932 selected individuals representing all identified species, sampling locations and sampling dates were tested for phytoplasma DNA using qPCR. Altogether, eight DNA samples were positive for phytoplasma DNA, among them species from the genera Euscelidius, Macrosteles, Euscelis, Anaceratagalliaand Psammotettix. These data will form the basis for choosing and timing appropriate control measures against Rubus stunt and also for potential insect vector transmission experiments.

Sci., 53: 95-100.A study of Auchenorrhyncha was carried out in 2014 and 2015 in 7 vineyard plots with different varieties and pest management strategies in the Nitra wine region and Lesser Carpathian wine region in western Slovakia. The aim of this study was to obtain information related to the presence of potential vector insects associated with grapevine yellows phytoplasmas from the Flavescence dorée and Bois noir groups. Insects were collected by sweeping with an entomological net. Thirty species of Auchenorrhyncha were identified as belonging to 6 families. Cicadellidae were the most abundant, comprising 20 species. Scaphoideus titanus was collected at 4 localities. Identification of the phytoplasma vector is critical to the national strategy for assessment and control of vectors spreading the phytoplasma disease in Slovakian vineyards. The first finding of Metcalfa pruinosa was noticed in vineyards in Slovakia.
