New findings in non‐invasive imaging of cutaneous endometriosis: Dermoscopy, high‐frequency ultrasound and reflectance confocal microscopy

Abstract: High-frequency ultrasound could represent a very useful tool for an early diagnosis of CE and its usefulness could be tested in patients with unusual cyclical pain, even before skin lesion appearance. RCM allowed the visualization of skin surface modification due to underlying endometriosic tissue. Dermoscopy showed a new aspect that was probably related to the mix of blood extravasation (ie, greyish background) and epidermal pigmentation (ie, brown pigmentation).

“…Dybiec et al 24 explored the utility of UHFUS in the differential diagnosis between benign and malignant skin lesions, comparing the echostructure of benign cavernous hemangioma and melanoma. Tognetti et al 25 described the UHFUS aspect of cutaneous endometriosis lesions occurring at the level of the caesarean scar, an often underdiagnosed disease. Boczar et al 26 described a case of lipofibromatous hamartoma of the wrist associated with progressive sensory disturbance.…”

“…The studies retrieved from the literature report on a wide variety of pathologic conditions of the skin. Overall, 8 studies described cutaneous diseases, 15,18,19,24,26,29,31,32 3 studies reported on cutaneous manifestations in course of systemic diseases, 17,28,34 and 7 studies described UHFUS aspect of malignant lesions. 13,16,[20][21][22]27,33 Chen et al 15 differentiated lichen sclerosus et atrophicus from morphea trough UHFUS examination, as the UHFUS finding of a hypoechoic band corresponding to the presence of severe lymphedema oriented the diagnosis.…”
