“…The northern SCS is influenced by monsoons, particularly the EAWM, which plays an important role in ocean and climate variability on seasonal to interannual time scales (e.g., Jiang et al., 2023; Murty et al., 2017; Ramos et al., 2020). During weak EAWM periods, warmer and wetter conditions occur, leading to relatively low SSS in the SCS.…”

“…Li et al, 2020;Linsley et al, 2019;Yu, 2012;Yu et al, 2012). Although previous studies have indicated that SST can affect the change of coral δ 13 C by influencing the photosynthetic intensity of zooxanthellae, no correlation was found between SST and skeleton δ 13 C values in a temperature-controlled tank experiment conducted over 142 days at five temperature settings between 21°C and 29°C (Suzuki et al, 2005;Wang et al, 2021;Xu et al, 2018). The seasonal variation patterns of coral-derived Sr/Ca-SST during 5.6-3.6 ka BP and modern instrumental SST in the eastern Hainan Island were the highest in July and the lowest in January, thus, lagging the seasonal variation patterns of carbon isotopes (Figure 2d).…”
