New European Instruments for Treatment Outcome Research: Reliability of the Maudsley Addiction Profile and Treatment Perceptions Questionnaire in Italy, Spain and Portugal

Abstract: This report describes the field testing of two recently developed instruments for treatment evaluation research – the Maudsley Addiction Profile (MAP) and the Treatment Perceptions Questionnaire (TPQ) – in Italy, Portugal and Spain. The MAP and TPQ have been developed in the United Kingdom as brief instruments which contain measures of high face validity for research applications with the adult psychoactive substance use disorder population. The present study assesses the application of these instruments in th… Show more

“…On one hand, these results may suffer from some methodological limitation: our sample was rather small and recruited at specialized "second-level" treatment centers, including a majority of middle-to upper-class clients. On the other hand, the population under study is sufficiently heterogeneous and the sampling representative of the most popular treatment modalities in Italy (Marsden et al, 2000), with the psychological influence of social handicap on the subjective well-being playing a secondary role in the evaluation of anhedonia.…”

“…Satisfaction with the treatment process was measured using the Treatment Perception Questionnaire (TPQ), which examines the patient's views toward (a) the nature and extent of their contact with a treatment program's staff team (five items) and (b) aspects of the operation of the treatment service and its rules and regulations (five items), giving a total score of between 0 and 40 (Marsden, Nizzoli, et al, 2000;Marsden, Stewart, et al, 2000). A semistructured interview at both follow-up points was used to assess the type and intensity of aftercare treatment received by each participant.…”

“…2017; 6(1):e33127. 7 primary field investigation undertaken by the original authors to assess the reliability and validity of the MAP, other studies confirm the original study report showing the internal and test-retest reliabilities of the MAP are satisfactory and that the instrument is adequate for health service evaluation in addition to other appropriate research purposes (29). In contrast with the MAP, the GREAT reviews patient's responses over a 3-month time frame, allowing for a broader scope to capture treatment response.…”
