New electro-optic light valve device for image storage and processing

Abstract: A new electro-optic light valve, based on the Pockels effect in a KD2PO4 crystal addressed by photoconduction, is described. At the present stage, the picture exhibits a resolution of 20 lp/mm (line pairs/mm), a very uniform contrast of 40/1, and an extensive grey scale; the writing time is less than 10 μsec. The device allows image addition and image subtraction and can be used as an input device in optical coherent processors.

“…In these photoconductor-electro optic medium sandwiches, the electro-optical medium can be a K. D*. P. crystal [3], a P. L. Z. T. ceramic [4], or a nematic liquid crystal used in its dynamic scattering mode [5,6]. Such photosensitive-electro-optic materials as bismuth silicate (Bi12Si020) [7,8] have recently led to very impressive displays.…”

“…Electro-optic (EO) devices, especially those that can convert an incoherent image into a coherent one in a real time scale, play a significant role in optical image processing systems, optical parallel-logic systems, optical network application systems and holography and its applications [1]. Coherent optical converters using the Pockels effect for modulation of a homogeneous light flux are known [2][3][4][5]. Such devices are the multilayer structures with EO material in which a photoconductor is used to control the electric field in the bulk of EO medium.…”

“…10 and 11. For the Pockels effect, the transmission T is given by (1) where k = ~(V~}2) and V is the voltage applied to the electro-optic part of the dielectric member. V A / 2 is the voltage required by DKDP for 100% transmission.…”
