New elastomers derived from copolymers of tetrahydrofuran and propylene oxide

Abstract: The homopolymers of tetrahydrofuran, polytetramethylene glycols, may be chain‐extended to form polyurethane elastomers. These materials, while possessing a low glass point temperature, suffer from cold hardening, and it was decided to investigate copolymers of tetrahydrofuran and propylene oxide as elastomer ingredients. The preparation of these copolymers has been achieved by use of a boron trifluoride etherate polymerization catalyst. Details are given of the properties of both the copolymer and derived elas… Show more

“…Propylene oxide can be copolymerized with other epoxides, such as ethylene oxide (qv) (30,34,35) or tetrahydrofuran (36,37) to produce copolymer polyols. Copolymerization with anhydrides (38) or CO 2 (39) results in polyesters and polycarbonates (qv), respectively.…”

“…11 · 12 Poly(oxytetrameth-830 ylene-co-oxypropyleneglycol) (POTM OPG) having MW 620 was prepared by cationic ring opening polymerization of THF and propylene oxide with excess of 1,4-butanediol, the chain transfer agent. 13 Linear polyesters with hydroxyl endcapping were best prepared by the polycondensation of these two glycols and the dimer acid taking excess glycol by the procedure of Brown et a/. 14 The polyesterification was carried out till the carboxyl number fallen below 1.0, which was estimated by the standard procedure.…”
