“…Furthermore, the accuracy of in vivo LAT DXA is influenced not only by the patient positioning but also by the heterogeneous nature of soft tissue surrounding the spine and higher X-ray beam attenuation related to the greater soft tissue volume in LAT geometry compared to AP geometry [30]. On the other hand, Vertebral Fracture Assessment (VFA) software of the new generation of densitometers [35, 36] can be utilized for precise and reliable assessment of vertebral geometry in AP and LAT views of the thoracic and lumbar spine.…”

“…Women with a pre-existing VF suffer a 4-to 5-fold increase risk of sustaining a new incident VF; this risk increases with the number of prevalent fractures at the baseline and was proved to be BMDindependent (194,197). Conventional radiography and DXA represent the techniques of choice for VFs detection (198)(199)(200). Radiologic methods for the identification and the scoring of VFs include quantitative morphometry (QM), the visual semiquantitative (SQ) method and the "algorithmbased qualitative" (ABQ) method (8).…”

“…A few studies have focused on the reliability and accuracy of such software in different settings. [66][67][68][69][70] In a few cases these were advocated as useful tools in differentiating normal vertebral shape from mild fractures, with higher overall accuracy and precision on normal vertebrae and mild fractures. 71 The approach with artificial neural networks was proposed as a further opportunity to recognize VFs, and it showed good performance in identifying both spinal defor-mity index 1 and 5, proposed in the development of an algorithm for predicting fractures.…”
