Click beetle larvae within the genus Agriotes (Coleoptera: Elateridae), commonly known as wireworms, are abundant ground-dwelling herbivores which can inflict considerable damage to field crops. In Central Europe up to 20 species, which differ in their distribution, ecology and pest status, occur in arable land. However, the identification of these larvae based on morphological characters is difficult or impossible. This hampers progress towards controlling these pests. Here, we present a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based approach to identify, for the first time, 17 Agriotes species typically found in Central Europe. Diagnostic sequence information was generated and submitted to GenBank, allowing the identification of these species via DNA barcoding. Moreover, multiplex PCR assays were developed to identify the nine most abundant species rapidly within a single-step reaction: Agriotes brevis, A. litigiosus, A. obscurus, A. rufipalpis, A. sordidus, A. sputator, A. ustulatus, A. lineatus and A. proximus. The latter two species remain molecularly indistinguishable, questioning their species status. The multiplex PCR assays proved to be highly specific against non-agrioted elaterid beetles and other non-target soil invertebrates. By testing the molecular identification system with over 900 field-collected larvae, our protocol proved to be a reliable, cheap and quick method to routinely identify Central European Agriotes species.

Structure and convention. This review is based largely on the published literature and on information associated with identified specimens mainly in Canadian collections. The arrangement of the species and classification follows that used by Bousquet et al. (2013). We use the term 'adventive species' for those that arrived in Canada from other countries either through natural dispersal or through inadvertent or deliberate human action during the period since initial arrival of European colonists (Wheeler and Hoebeke 2009, 2017). We do not include coverage of native Canadian species transported to new provinces and territories within Canada. We also do not include arrival of native United States species into Canada. Images. Images were taken using an image processing system (Nikon SMZ-U stereo-microscope with a ProgRes 3012 digital camera or Nikon SMZ1500 stereoscopic microscope fitted with a Nikon Digit-like camera DXM1200F) and compiled using Adobe Photoshop software. Distribution. Each species is cited with its currently known distribution in Canada and the USA. Data for distribution maps were extracted from specimens in collections, from literature records and, in a few cases, from authoritatively identified images from the BugGuide website (www.bugguide.net). Geographic coordinates were standardized using NAD83 datum, and maps projected onto a Lambert Conic Conformal using ESRI ArcMap version 10 for Windows.

A molecular pbylogeny is presented for tbe five main species oí Aphthona ñea beetles that were introduced to North America in conjunction with the leafy spurge {Euphorbia esula L.) biological control program. The mitochondrial genome was examined using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of a 9,000-bp segment and nucleotide sequencing of a 575-bp piece of coxl-cox2. A neighbor-joining tree of the RFLP data, along with neighbor-joining and maximum parsimony trees of the sequence alignments, all had the same major branching pattern. Each of the recognized species was a well defined clade. Three within species subbranches had very limited mitochondrial DNA diversity. One was a Wolbachia-iniected lineage of A. nigriscutis most likely generated by a Wolbachia sweep where the spreading Wolbachia infection brought along the infected mitochondrial haplotype. Two of three subclades of A. lacertosa also had very little genetic diversity. One of these subclades also displayed a divergence from the other two that was analogous to the divergence observed between some of the other species pairs, suggesting it may be a cryptic species. Its distribution was restricted to Canada. Tbe other genetically depauperate A. lacertosa line was the only lineage recovered in the United States. The geographically restricted nature of some of the genetic lines could be exploited to possibly improve biological control in some habitats through redistribution to other locations. It is not obvious that either Wolbachia infection or a narrow genetic base has had any detrimental effect on biological control.
