Early discussions and theoretical positions concerning rural change were developed by researchers from countries with post-production economies in order to explain the rural transformations. When discussing economic change in rural space over the last decades, Marsden, T. et al. (1993) presented a new perspective for understanding rural restructuring that includes new subjects, such as capital mobility, flexible production regimes, complexity in the relationship between technology and environment, economic deregulation and new political processes. According to these authors, in order to understand such processes, it is necessary to research the effects of globalization at local scale of action. A recurrent theme in rural studies has been the significance of diverse globalization processes as drivers of rural change (Marsden, Ploeg, J.D. van der et al. 2010). In summary, this article forms a critique of the simplistic assumptions formulated in the literature regarding spatial change, which assumes the rural is essentially subject to external actions. I argue that the rural space should also be seen to possess its own dynamics which contribute to complex pathways and so adapts to new scenarios of spatial change in the contemporary world.T

ResumenSe requiere revalorizar la agricultura tradicional campesina para generar estrategias que den respuestas a la crisis e incertidumbres que presentan los territorios rurales: inseguridad alimentaria; deterioro del tejido social; deterioro ambiental de los bienes comunes del paisaje: agua, suelo, biodiversidad; despoblamiento juvenil; desarraigo, entre otros. Pues los mundos de vida rural desde el desarrollo de la agricultura industrial se han evaluado únicamente desde el criterio productivo, se requiere entonces ampliar la mirada desde el paradigma multifuncional de la agricultura -MFA-, y profundizar investigaciones que aborden no solamente aspectos de la producción, sino también, la protección de bienes comunes, el fortalecimiento del tejido social y revaloración del conocimiento local, el cual ha propiciado emergencias de novedades importantes para la reproducción de las culturas locales. El presente artículo plantea algunas reflexiones desarrolladas en la Universidad Nacional de Colombia de múltiples funciones de la agricultura: función cultural, función ambiental, función social. A partir de la red intercultural de estudios rurales que se viene adelantando en cuatro regiones diferentes ecosistémicas y culturales de Colombia, y que a través de investigaciones, prácticas, pasantías de extensión solidaria tanto de investigadores de posgrado y con estudiantes de diferentes facultades (ciencias agrarias, zootecnia y ciencias humanas) se busca responder a problemas reales del mundo rural.Palabras clave: Agricultura tradicional, multifuncionalidad de la agricultura, teoría de redes, gestión local del conocimiento. AbstractRequired to revalue the traditional peasant agriculture to generate strategies that respond to the crisis and uncertainties posed by rural areas: food insecurity, deterioration of the social network, environmental degradation of the commons landscape: water, soil, biodiversity; Juvenile depopulation, etc. Owever, the worlds of rural life from industrial agriculture has been evaluated only from the production criteria, is required then expand the view from the paradigm of multifunctional agriculture-MFA-and deepen research that addresses not only aspects of production but also the protection of common goods, strengthening the social network and revaluation of local knowledge which has led to important developments for emergencies playback of local cultures. This paper presents some reflections developed in the National University of Colombia in other multiple functions of agriculture: cultural function, environmental function, social function. From the intercultural network of rural studies has been underway in four regions of Colombia, and cultural contexts, ecosystems different, and through researchers from the graduate program in rural development and internships undergraduate students in agricultural sciences, animal production, human sciences, seeks to respond to real problems of rural areas.

a b s t r a c tThis multidisciplinary special issue examines the contemporary rural restructuring in China, focusing on spatial restructuring, economic restructuring and social restructuring and the key challenges for rural areas, whether at local, regional, national or international level. The contributions to this special issue provide conceptualetheoretical and empirical takes on rural restructuring in China. However, the volatility and complexity of rural restructuring in China will present ongoing challenges for further research on the restructuring of rural China. In view of this, this themed edition makes a compelling call for more systematic research of rural restructuring based on extensive disciplinary interaction. This special issue is published to coincide with the 33rd International Geographical Congress (IGC) of IGU in Beijing.
