New device for intraoperative blood suction avoiding turbulences

Abstract: IntroductionBleeding during surgery is common. Increased bleeding may disturb procedure, induces haemodynamic instability and results in need for blood transfusion. Allogenic blood transfusions increase mortality and morbidity, especially risk of infections, pulmonary and renal complications, as well as thromboembolic events. Autotransfusion is in many cases a solution but forced suction may destroy or alter blood cells because of turbulences, shear forces and contact of the blood to extrinsic surfaces. The ai… Show more

“…Budde et al have shown that avoiding turbulence (audible as a noise) reduces blood cell damage [52]. The technical solution for this is the Turbulence Controlled Suction System developed by Friedrich et al [53]. Further studies have to show the impact of suction cup geometry in this relation.…”

“…Our working group has shown that it is possible to reduce flow-induced noise and air admixture using a polypragmatic approach. The Turbulence Controlled Suction System (TCSS) adjusts the rotational speed of the roller pump system via a vibration sensor in the suction handle [53]. We can assume that the combination of TCSS and optimized suction head geometry should further reduce the noise level.…”

“…The turbulence-controlled suction system (TCSS) significantly reduces turbulence, is pressure-limited and reduces the proportion of pumped air. 15 The roller pump-based TCSS is a modified suction setup with acoustic-based turbulence detection at the tip of the handgrip. When turbulence is detected, the control setup reduces the speed of the roller pump automatically for minimization of suction pressure and turbulence.…”
