New developments in the analysis of column-collapse pyroclastic density currents through numerical simulations of multiphase flows

Abstract: Abstract.A granular multiphase model has been used to evaluate the action of differently sized particles on the dynamics of fountains and associated pyroclastic density currents. The model takes into account the overall disequilibrium conditions between a gas phase and several solid phases, each characterized by its own physical properties. The dynamics of the granular flows (fountains and pyroclastic density currents) has been simulated by adopting a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes model for describing the tu… Show more

“…PDCs that result from collapsing eruption columns are thought to be highly density stratified (Breard & Lube, 2017; Breard et al., 2016; Brown & Branney, 2013; Lepore & Scarpati, 2012; Valentine, 1987). Density stratification is thought to hinder turbulence, mixing, and even particle settling within PDCs and other sediment‐laden gravity currents (Calder et al., 1997; Cantero et al., 2009; Davarpanah Jazi & Wells, 2016; Ellison & Turner, 1959; Felix et al., 2005; Fisher, 1979; Hanenkamp, 2011; Jacobson & Testik, 2014; Kneller & Buckee, 2000; Meiburg & Kneller, 2010; Migeon et al., 2012; Riley et al., 2008; Ruddick et al., 1989; Sulpizio et al., 2007), which impedes lift‐off relative to less stratified or non‐stratified currents.…”
