Three facies zones are dis tin guished in the up per Dvuyakornaya and the Mayak for ma tions of the east ern Cri mean Pen in sula: basinal, slope and toe-of-slope zones. In this in ter val we iden tify the low est Berriasian Jacobi and Grandis subzones of authors, in ex panded form, ex ceed ing 160 metres in thick ness. We pres ent new magnetostratigraphic in ter pre ta tions, and iden tify two nor mal and two re versed po lar ity in ter vals, as signed to M19n, M18r, M18n and M17r, with M19n2n, M19n1r and M19n1n iden ti fied in the up per most Dvuyakornaya For ma tion. In the Mayak For ma tion we re cord the top of M19n.1n, with M18r, M18n and a thick M17r above. In these two for ma tions com po nent calpionellid spe cies have been iden ti fied which char ac ter ise the Alpina, Ferasini and Elliptica subzones (Calpionella Zone). In M19n, the FADs of the cal car e ous nannofossils Hexalithus strictus, Cruciellipsis cuvillieri, Nannoconus wintereri, N. steinmannii mi nor and N. kamptneri mi nor are found, which is con sis tent with other Tethyan re gions. N. steinmannii steinmannii and N. kamptneri kamptneri first appear in M18r at Ili Burnu. Spec i mens of the ap par ently Tithonian foraminiferan in dex Anchispirocyclina lusitanica are found, but in the Berriasian lower Mayak For ma tion.

The current ammonite-and buchiid-based biostratigraphical successions of the Volgian Stage are outlined, with an analysis of the most important data that support correlation throughout the Panboreal Superrealm. Updated ammonite zonal schemes were proposed for the Volgian of the type region (the Russian Platform) and Svalbard. The lower Volgian successions in all areas except the Russian Platform, with its eudemic 1) virgatitid lineage and Submediterranean faunal elements, were dominated by Pectinatites and Eosphinctoceras-Subdichotomoceras. The last two genera were especially common eastwards from the Ural Mountains. During the middle Volgian, provincialism developed quickly within the ammonites, and unified assemblages with early Palvovia and Dorsoplanites at the base of the substage were replaced by numerous local eudemic faunas. Despite this, migrations of species of Crendonites, Laugeites, Epivirgatites Epipallasiceras, Epilaugeites, and Taimyrosphinctes occurred at regular intervals and these enable precise correlations between the faunal sub-provinces. The zonation of the upper Volgian is mainly based upon the succession of Craspedites (on Subcraspedites in England and North Sea), and can be traced throughout the Arctic. Zonation based on the bivalve Buchia enables correlations to be made between the successions over much of the Northern Hemisphere, including Northern California, British Columbia, Arctic areas, and the Russian Platform. Each substage of the Volgian is characterized by buchiids with different types of the ontogenetic development. Research on the infrazonal subdivision of the Volgian Stage based on buchiids is currently in progress. Our analyses of the ammonite and buchiid successions of the Panboreal Superrealm lead us to conclude that there are no major faunal gaps in Volgian successions of the Russian Platform and Northern Siberia.

The first Sr chemostratigraphic data are obtained for the Upper Jurassic carbonate sections in the Demerdzhi Plateau of the Crimean Mountains. The oncoid, microbial, and organogenic-detrital limestone varieties representing shallow water marine microfacies of the carbonate platform served as material for these studies. The limestone samples for reconstructing the isotopic parameters of depositional environments were selected using geochemical criteria (Mn/Sr < 0.2, Fe/Sr < 1.6, Mg/Ca < 0.024) and subjected to the prelim inary treatment in a 1 N ammonium acetate solution. The 87 Sr/ 86 Sr value in the least altered samples increases up the section from 0.70701 to 0.70710. The obtained 87 Sr/ 86 Sr values are correlated with the Sr iso tope properties of belemnite rostrae characterizing the Pectinatites scitulus-Pavlovia rotunda ammonite zone in the zonal scale of the Boreal realm, Hyponoticeras hybonotum-M. ponti/B. peroni Zone in the zonal scale of the Tethyan realm, and lower part of the Dorsoplanites panderi Zone in the zonal scale for the transitional domain of the East European Platform. The Sr chemostratigraphic correlation indicates the early Tithonian age of sediments developed in the eastern part of the Demerdzhi Plateau and restricts the upper boundary of the limestone section redeposited within carbonate breccia of Mount Severnaya Demerdzhi to the terminal early Tithonian. The Sr isotope data are used for calculating the sedimentation rates for lime stones. They are estimated to be at least 0.23 m/1000 years, which is an anomalously high value for pre Qua ternary carbonate platforms.
