New data on theMerodonMeigen 1803 fauna (Diptera: Syrphidae) of Turkey including description of a new species and changes in the nomenclatural status of several taxa

Abstract: Abstract. The Old World syrphid genus Merodon Meigen 1803 is highly species-diverse and has a signifi cant number of endemic species in the circum-Mediterranean area. The present study reports on taxonomic changes resulting from the examination of adult Merodon specimens collected in 15 Turkish provinces during the period 1992 to 2002, and provides new faunistic data. Merodon ilgazense n. sp. is described.

“…The choice is justified by three facts: (i) the Aegean constitutes a hotspot for Merodon diversity (Hurkmans, 1993;Dirickx, 1994;Vujić et al, 2007Vujić et al, , 2011Ståhls et al, 2009;, which is certainly related to the high diversity of bulbous plants (Merodon larval host plants) in the region (Bazos, 2005); (ii) Merodon is one of the best known insect genera in the Aegean regarding its biodiversity and biogeography; and (iii) our research team has substantial material at hand and expertise on this genus (Vujić et al, 2007;Ståhls et al, 2009;Radenković et al, 2011).…”

“…In the last decade, a number of papers have been published on particular species groups, such as aureus , melanocerus , nanus , natans , nigritarsis , ruficornis (Milankov et al 2008a, Francuski et al 2009, 2011, Vujić et al 2012, 2013, 2015, Šašić et al 2016, Radenković et al, 2018). The Mediterranean fauna has been frequently studied (Mengual et al 2006, Marcos-García et al 2007, 2011, Petanidou et al 2011, Radenković et al 2011, Ricarte et al 2012, Ståhls et al 2009, 2016, Vujić et al 2007, 2011), whereas the Afrotropical Region with less than ten recognised species (Pape and Thompson 2013), has received less attention (Radenković et al 2018). …”
