New data on the geographic distribution of chromosome races of Sorex araneus (Soricidae, Eulipotyphla) in European Russia

Abstract: ABSTRACT. New information is presented on the distributional ranges of the West Dvina, Moscow, Neroosa, Serov, Sok and Yuryuzan chromosome races in European Russia. Our study provides chromosome data on 67 common shrews from 28 localities in various parts of the East European Plain and foothills of the Ural Mountains. No new chromosome races were discovered but our data added substantially to the known geographic range of the Serov race both north-and southwards from the Asian slopes of the Ural Ridge where it… Show more

“…Three NEKG races are present in the vicinity of the Urals and are separated from the main NEKG stock by various intermediate races in northern Russia (Orlov et al, 2007;Shchipanov et al, 2008). In contrast to the southern species border in Russia (Bystrakova et al, 2007), the very limits of the species range in the north are still not fully specifi ed regarding chromosome races and karyotypic groups. In sum, one site of the Kanin chromosome race (a single specimen) was studied on the Kanin Peninsula, so far the most northern karyotypic description of the common shrew in Russia (Fredga, 1996a).…”

“…A single fi nding concerns the Yagry race on an island in the North Dvina River delta in the White Sea (Orlov et al, 2007). Better described are the more central Russian races Kirillov, Petchora, Serov, Sok and Manturovo (Bystrakova et al, 2007;Shchipanov et al, 2008Shchipanov et al, , 2009a. Here I describe the chromosomal characteristics of common shrews from close to the Kola Peninsula in Russia which may be interesting in view of the probable connection with Scandinavian chromosome races of the common shrew already well examined.…”

“…The Neroosa race (go, hi, kr, mn, and p/q;Bulatova et al 2000) is monomorphic for four Rb translocations throughout its large distribution range in the Oka and Don River basins (Bystrakova et al 2007). The acrocentric chromosomes g, o, k, and r were noted at some sites in Ukraine (Mishta et al 2000) and near the Belarusian boundary, in the vicinity of Novozybkov city (see Suppl.…”

“…The Garevka is situated at a foothill region at about 300 m altitude, and the Jany is situated at a hill at about 550 m above sea level. The membership in a race was identified under karyological studies at each of the localities (Bystrakova et al, 2007;Shchipanov et al, 2011;. The Pechora race with gi, hn, jl, kq, mo, and pr diagnostic chromosomes, and the Manturovo race with go, hi, jl, kq, mn, and pr chromosomes represent the East European Karyotypic Group, EEKG (Orlov et al, 2004).…”
