a b s t r a c tBased on geographic information (database PALEOFAUNA), in combination with 14 C and other methods of paleo dating (1584 localities, 4033 dates, including 1501 direct dates), we first examined details of changes of mammoth distribution in Eurasia on the whole and in single parts of the range over the last 50ky. The analysis of regional features in the dynamics of mammoth range and the quantity of dated localities acknowledged a leading role of the climatic (environmental) factor in these processes. The maximum size of the Eurasian range, the largest number of remains of mammoths from dated localities and, probably, the maximum total number of population were established for the range of 38.2 e8.6 cal ky BP (Denekamp interstadial ¼ Bryansk interstadial). In Western and Central Europe, the increase of population was observed during Huneborg stadial (40.8e38.2 cal ky BP). In eastern Siberia, the maximum population growth occurred in the Last Glacial Maximum (28.6e22.5 cal ky BP), and in Western Siberia e during Deglaciation (22.5e14.7 cal ky BP). The population dynamics at the periphery of the range (Islands of Japan, British Isles, Northern Europe, Southern Siberia and Northern China, and, but to lesser extent, South-Eastern Europe) differs from the dynamics of its main part. The southernmost parts of the range e Southern Siberia and southeastern Europe experienced similar changes. Population dynamics in the Iberian Peninsula was much alike the changes in Western and Central Europe. We suggested that some peripheral populations could periodically be isolated from the populations of the main part of the range. Direct calibrated radiocarbon dates fixed upper boundary of extinction of this species in different parts of range within time interval from 21 (the Iberian Peninsula) to 4 (northeastern Siberia) thousands years BP. The hypotheses about the causes of the dynamics of the area and population of the mammoth in Eurasia, including those related to the extinction of certain genetic lines of a mammoth in the Late Pleistocene, are being discussed.

21Climate changes that occurred during the Late Pleistocene have profound effects on the distribution of 22 many plant and animal species and influenced the formation of contemporary faunas and floras of 23 Europe. The course and mechanisms of responses of species to the past climate changes are now 24 being intensively studied by the use of direct radiocarbon dating and genetic analyses of fossil 25 remains. Here, we review the advances in understanding these processes by the example of four 26 mammal species: woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius), cave bear (Ursus spelaeus s. l.), saiga 27 antelope (Saiga tatarica) and collared lemmings (Dicrostonyx ssp.). The cases discussed here as well 28 as others show that the migrations, range shifts and local extinctions were the main responses to 29 climate changes and that the dynamics of these climate driven processes were much more profound 30 2 than it was previously thought. Each species reacted by its individual manner, which depended on its 31 biology and adaptation abilities to the changing environment and climate conditions. The most severe 32 changes in European ecosystems that affected the largest number of species took place around 33-33 31 ka BP, during the Last Glacial Maximum 22-19 ka BP and the Late Glacial warming 15-13 ka BP. 34 35 37 38 84 2008; Palkopoulou et al., 2013). The divergence of lineages I and II was previously estimated to ca. 1 85 Ma ago (Debruyne et al., 2008; Gilbert and Drautz, 2008), however, most recent estimations suggest 86 much younger date about 300 ka BP (Palkopoulou et al., 2013). Coalescent simulations suggested 87 that actual split of three mammoth populations took place around 200 ka BP and was followed by a 88 demographic expansion that started around 121 ka BP (Palkopoulou et al., 2013). This expansion 89 coincides broadly with the end of Eemian Interstadial, which suggests that mammoths survived this 90 4 warm period confined to refugial areas and expanded as climate got cooler at the beginning of 91 Weichselian glaciation (Palkopoulou et al., 2013). Surprisingly, this was not supported by the analyses 92 of the whole paleogenomes, which indicated a much earlier expansion ca. 280 ka years ago and the 93 maximum effective population size during Eemian (Palkopoulou et al., 2015).94 95 96 Fig. 1. Needles, wood and pollen of Larix, recorded in a peat deposit from Kotelny Island, northern Siberia, indicate the local occurrence of larch around 38 000 cal. a BP, which is during the Middle Pleniglacial (Greenland Interstadial 8) of the Weichselian last glacial period. The pollen record, dominated by Cyperaceae, Poaceae, Betula, Alnus, Salix and Artemisia, indicates steppe‐tundra conditions with some shrubs and trees. The distribution of Larix species plays an important role in the reconstruction of climatic conditions during the Weichselian in Siberia. Nowadays Larix does not occur on Kotelny Island and in the present situation the temperature may not be the limiting factor for Larix, but instead the long, snowy winters and the moist tundra vegetation. Our data may contribute to a better understanding of Larix refugia and Weichselian climatic conditions in northern Siberia.
