New Concepts in Breast Cancer Emerge from Analyzing Clinical Data Using Numerical Algorithms

Abstract: A small international group has recently challenged fundamental concepts in breast cancer. As a guiding principle in therapy, it has long been assumed that breast cancer growth is continuous. However, this group suggests tumor growth commonly includes extended periods of quasi-stable dormancy. Furthermore, surgery to remove the primary tumor often awakens distant dormant micrometastases. Accordingly, over half of all relapses in breast cancer are accelerated in this manner. This paper describes how a numerical… Show more

“…Moreover, a double peaked relapse pattern of breast cancer recurrence has been described, suggesting the risk of metastasis is not constant over time [ 30 34 ]. The first peak starts 10 months after the operation and reaches its maximum approximately 18–24 months after surgery.…”

“…The importance of understanding the surgical inflammatory response is further highlighted in the developing field of oncoanesthesiology, in which anesthesia technique and perioperative strategies, potentially including anti-inflammatory strategies, may impact early risk of recurrence during the first two postoperative years after cancer surgery [48][49][50][51]. “…If anyone is wondering how a medical researcher can be a guest editor of a journal dedicated to ANN, I am a classically trained experimental physicist but made a career change into cancer research a number of years ago. This was recently documented in a sister MDPI journal [ 11 ].…”
