Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR and electron spin resonance [ESRJ) yields uniquely both dynamic and structural information on lipids and proteins in biological and bilayer membranes. Recent advances have been made in elucidating the three-dimensional structure of membrane-embedded proteins by solid state NMR techniques and by site-directed ESR spin labelling.
