New Combinations in Lomatium (Apiaceae, Subfamily Apioideae)

Abstract: Molecular and morphological phylogenetic analyses indicate that many of the perennial endemic genera of North American Apiaceae are either polyphyletic or nested within paraphyletic groups. In light of these results, taxonomic changes are needed to ensure that ongoing efforts to prepare state, regional, and continental floristic treatments of Apiaceae reflect recent findings. Thus, six new combinations are made to accommodate the movement of five taxa from their current assignment into the genus Lomatium and t… Show more

“…Since 1980, 21 new species and seven new varieties of Lomatium have been described (based on an analysis of data available from Tropicos®, ). In addition, taxa of other genera (e.g., Orogenia , Oreoxis , and Tauschia ) have been transferred into Lomatium (Feist et al, ). This taxonomic instability reflects the difficulty in sorting out evolutionary relationships using morphology alone, possibly due to the rapidity with which the genus diversified (Sun et al, ; Sun & Downie, , , ; George et al, ).…”

“…The perennial endemic North America (PENA) clade of Apioideae (Apiaceae) is one of the largest land plant radiations in western North America with 19 genera and ca. 230 species (Sun et al, 2004 ; Feist et al, 2017 ). The group has been shown to comprise several examples of apparent homoplasy in characters that were previously thought to be taxonomically informative (Downie et al, 2002 ; Sun and Downie, 2010a ; George et al, 2014 ).…”

“…demonstrates that fruit morphology can be homoplastic (George et al, 2014 ). The discovery that the two species of Orogenia are nested within Lomatium was also based on results from molecular data (Sun et al, 2010a , b ; George et al, 2014 ; Feist et al, 2017 ). Orogenia had been defined on the basis of fruits with lateral wings that were thick and corky (Coulter and Rose, 1900 ); however, the two species were not monophyletic within Lomatium based on DNA sequence data and provide another example of morphologically based taxonomy that did not reflect evolutionary history in this clade (Sun and Downie, 2010a ; George et al, 2014 ; Feist et al, 2017 ).…”
