New CMB spectral distortion constraints on decaying dark matter with full evolution of electromagnetic cascades before recombination

Abstract: Current constraints on energy injection in the form of energetic particles before the epoch of recombination using CMB spectral distortions assume that all energy goes into y and µ-type distortions. We revisit these constraints with exact calculations of the spectral distortions by evolving the electromagnetic cascades. The actual spectral distortion differs in shape and amplitude from the y-type distortion and depends on the energy and nature of injected particles. The constraints on the energy injection proc… Show more

“…Taking these ultra-relativistic distortions into account modify the constraints on energy injections. It was shown in [32] that for dark matter decay to monochromatic electron-positron pairs or photon pairs, the constraints can relax by upto a factor of 4-5 for injection redshifts z inj <50000. In this paper, we extend these calculations to additional dark matter decay channels to standard model particles, Hawking evaporation of primordial black holes and decay of cosmic strings.…”

“…We give the full parameter table as well as 2-parameter probability density function (PDF) contour plots of dark matter decay fraction vs standard ΛCDM parameters for a few illustrative cases in Appendix D. [31]) is also shown. Energydependent spectral distortion constraints of [63] and extrapolated constraints for Primordial Inflation Explorer (PIXIE) [64], assuming a factor of 1000 improvement over COBE-FIRAS, are also shown. The two lines for BBN are our strongest constraints from 4 He destruction (stronger) and 2 H destruction for photon injection with the injected photon energy of E γ = 26 MeV and 5 MeV respectively.…”

“…Therefore, for longer decay lifetimes (or lower decay redshifts) constraints on decaying dark matter get stronger in general. However, the scaling is not exactly (1 + z) since the electromagnetic cascade evolution also has a redshift dependence [63].
