New cancer cases in France in 2015 attributable to infectious agents: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: To provide an assessment of the burden of cancer in France in 2015 attributable to infectious agents. A systematic literature review in French representative cancer cases series was undertaken of the prevalence of infectious agents with the major associated cancer types. PubMed was searched for original studies published up to September 2016; random-effects meta-analyses were performed. Cancer incidence data were obtained from the French Cancer Registries Network, thereby allowing the calculation of national i… Show more

“…The estimates in our study are limited by scarcity of local data, especially in low-income countries. To allow for meaningful comparisons, precise estimates can and should be made by individual countries using all available sources of data, 31,32 and we hope that our approach for calculating attributable fractions can serve as a useful and standardised model. Periodical assessments of repre sentative case-series of cancer in sentinel sites with high-quality cancer registries could assist with long-term monitoring of trends in the burden of infection-related cancers.…”

“…We still performed a complementary analysis to estimate the number of potentially HPV-related cancers identified through our study that would actually be related to HPV. We used PAF values available from the most recent French study in the literature [ 20 ]. However, we used aggregated PAF values for the group of vulva and vagina cancers as well as for HNCs due to the lack of data availability and transposability, respectively.…”

“…Results have thus to be interpreted taking into account that, among vulva and vaginal cancers, vagina cancers are the rarest but associated with the highest PAF value (70% versus 15%) [ 21 ]. Among HNCs, oropharyngeal cancers are more common than oral cancers, and are associated to a higher PAF value (30% versus 4%) [ 20 ].…”
