New Breast Measurement Technique and Bra Sizing System Based on 3D Body Scan Data

Abstract: Objective: The aim of this study was to develop a method for measuring breast size from three-dimensional (3D) body scan image data. Background: Previous bra studies established reference points by directly contacting the subject's naked skin to determine the boundary of the breast. But some subjects were uncomfortable with these types of measurements. This study examined noncontact methods of extracting breast reference points from 3D body scan data that were collected while subjects were wearing standardized … Show more

“…Bra sizing systems are built around dividing users into groups with similar body measurements. Body size determines the key primary dimensions of grouping [14]. The bra size is composed of Band size and Cup size, denoted by two primary dimensions: Bust and Underbust [14,15].…”

“…Body size determines the key primary dimensions of grouping [14]. The bra size is composed of Band size and Cup size, denoted by two primary dimensions: Bust and Underbust [14,15]. Therein, the underbust measurement determines the size of the bra band, which encircles the wearer's rib cage.…”

“…In another work, the breast arc length, which is utilized as a critical dimension when making bra cup patterns, was determined to develop a new bra sizing system. 11 In a report on the aesthetics of breast shapes, Liang et al 12 classified female breasts into nine types based on two parameters (breast distance and the height of the breast points). In an investigation of breast shape preferences, breasts were identified into 12 shapes according to the displacement values for the concave and convex upper poles.…”

“…16 Oh and Chun emphasized the importance of measuring breast size precisely in order to achieve good fit in bra design. 17 Lee and Hong studied the geometrical shape of the underbust curve and came up with an optimal design for the underwire that could provide better support for breasts. 18 Zheng and colleagues developed an enhanced bra sizing system with higher accommodation rates for Chinese females based on the anthropometric analysis of 456 nude breasts.…”
