New Borate Structures for Nlo Applications

Abstract: By considering selected examples of new structure types, guidelines are set forth for the synthesis of new solid-state inorganic borates that are likely to have desirable properties for nonlinear optical applications. The structures of two new, noncentrosymmetric orthoborate fluorides BaCaBO3F and Ba7(BO3)3F5 demonstrate a feasibility for controlling linear optical properties and for producing noncentrosymmetric borates that melt congruently. The structure of SrLi(B3O5)3 represents an additional example of a n… Show more

“…2), thus reducing their alignment and, to some degree, the nonlinear coefficient d 22 value theoretically possible with perfect alignment. [92] A similar misalignment is observed in Sr 2 Be 2 B 2 O 7 , where [BO 3 ] groups are linked, through [BeO 4 ] tetrahedra by sharing corners, to sheets, which are stacked with coplanar orientation along [001]. With respect to the polar diad axis of the structure they are rotated by an angle of 24 ( Fig.…”

“…Like GdCa 4 (BO 3 ) 3 O these crystals also show inclusions of bubbles. [90,91] A very new borate compound for potential NLO applications, BaCaBO 3 F, has been reported recently by Keszler et al [92] Doping of the Ca sites with Yb leads to IR laser emission and the material is suggested to be a selffrequency-doubling laser. Large single crystals of Yb:BaCaBO 3 F can be grown by the Czochralski technique from a melt prepared in two steps to avoid the formation of Ba and/or Ca peroxides.…”

“…Since the O1 sites are partly occupied, there will be the absorption peaks of BO 4 and also of BO 3 groups. In the IR spectrum (see the Supporting Information), [30] the strong peaks at 1406, 1354, 1298, and 907 cm À1 are attributed to the asymmetric and the symmetric stretching of BO 3 . The peaks at 1028 and 792 cm À1 are attributed to the asymmetric and the symmetric stretching of BO 4 .…”

“…
The generation of deep-ultraviolet (UV) coherent light from nonlinear optical (NLO) materials [1][2][3][4] as one of the most promising resource, has become a topic of intensive study because of its important applications in a broad range of fields, such as semiconductor photolithography, laser micromachining, photochemical synthesis, and material processing. They are able to shorten the wavelength of light by a factor of two (or doubling the frequency), based on the process of second-harmonic generation (SHG), which occurs only when a centrosymmetric symmetry operation is absent in a crystal.
