New BaM2(SeO3)3·nH2O (M = Co, Ni, Mn, Mg; n ≈ 3) Zemannite‐Type Frameworks: Single‐Crystal Structures of BaCo2(SeO3)3·3H2O, BaMn2(SeO3)3·3H2O and BaMg2(SeO3)3·3H2O

Abstract: The syntheses and characterisation of a new family of isostructural mixed-metal selenites based on the zemannitetype framework are described. These BaM 2 (SeO 3 ) 3 ·3H 2 O phases are built up from three-dimensional networks of MO 6 (M = Co, Ni, Mn, Mg) octahedra and SeO 3 pyramids. The octahedral groups form isolated M 2 O 9 face-sharing pairs, which are linked by the selenite anions into a three-dimensional anionic framework. The framework encapsulates one-

“…2). The recent definition of representatives of the form BaM 2 II (SeO 3 ) 3 Á3H 2 O is noted, [12] also containing octahedrally coordinated metal atoms and selenite pyramids, but differentiated from the present by the valence and form of the accompanying metal ion, as well as the degree of hydration, the latter forming the elegant family of zemannite-type salts.…”

“…Distortions of the channels from the superordinate hexagonal symmetry have been observed for several other zemannite-type phases. In the crystal structures of Ba[M 2 (SeO 3 ) 3 ]•3H 2 O (M = Co, Mn, Mg) (Johnston and Harrison 2011), which exhibit a fourfold zemannite superstructure obtained by doubling a and b of the parent zemannite unit-cell, the M•••M distances as drawn in Fig. 3 vary by only a maximum of 0.15 Å compared to more than 0.6 Å for K[(Cu II ,Mn II ,Mn III ) 2 (TeO 3 ) 3 ]•2H 2 O.…”

“…During the 1990s, first synthetic zemannite-type phases moved into the spotlight of research, as exemplified by the oxidoselenates(IV) K 2 [Co II 2 (SeO 3 ) 3 ]•2H 2 O and K 2 [Ni II 2 (SeO 3 ) 3 ]•2H 2 O (Wildner 1993), and the oxidotellurates(IV) Na 2 [Co II 2 (TeO 3 ) 3 ]•3H 2 O and Na 2 [Zn II 2 (TeO 3 ) 3 ]•3H 2 O (Miletich 1995b). Pioneering work produced various new oxidoselenates(IV) and -tellurates(IV) with Na + , K + , and Ba 2+ cations in the channels, and even examples revealing neutral frameworks and empty channels have been reported (Wontcheu and Schleid 2003;Kong et al 2010;Johnston and Harrison 2011). The first synthetic zemannite-type phases containing more than one transition metal cation, with compositions of Na x Editorial handling: T. Armbruster…”
