New Artificial Insemination Technologies for Swine

Abstract: Contents Better efficiency in swine artificial insemination (AI) is accomplished by reducing the necessary number of sperm cells and achieving high reproductive performance. Some strategies have been developed for use under field conditions, such as the site of sperm deposition (post‐cervical AI), a single AI with control of oestrus and ovulation (fixed‐time AI), and the better use of high genetic merit boars, to spread their genes as much as possible. To apply these technologies, it is important to understand… Show more

“…La inseminación artificial (IA) se ha utilizado ampliamente en la producción porcina, principalmente debido a la rápida distribución de genes de machos genéticamente superiores (1). Aproximadamente el 66% de la cabaña comercial brasileña es inseminada artificialmente (2); sin embargo, existe evidencia empírica de que este porcentaje podría llegar a más del 90%, demandando una producción anual de 9.5 millones de dosis de semen de alta calidad (DS).…”

“…Artificial insemination (AI) has been widely used in swine production mostly because of rapid distribution of genes from genetically superior males (1). Approximately 66% of the commercial Brazilian herd is artificially inseminated (2); however, there is empirical evidence that this percentage could reach over 90%, demanding an annual production of 9.5 million high quality semen doses (SD).…”

“…Instead, the chance of distributing a good genetic resource across countries and particularly, enabling locally raised sows to be bred with semen having the best estimated breeding values available in Europe is very real. Use of AI for breeding pigs has become instrumental for facilitating global improvements in fertility, genetics, labour, and herd health (Bortolozzo et al, 2015;Knox, 2016). The differences in number of piglets born live between boars of the two breed types in this study were not significant (Table 1), instead, it is the value for Pietrain boars that stood out over the other categories.…”

“…Artificial insemination (AI) is the main method for sow reproduction (Bortolozzo et al, 2015; Knox, 2016; Riesenbeck, 2011). More than 90% of swine AI worldwide are carried out with extended liquid semen stored up to 5 days (Johnson, Weitze, Fiser, & Maxwell, 2000; Khalifa et al., 2014).…”
