New Approach to Multivariate Standard Addition Based on Multivariate Curve Resolution by Alternating Least-Squares: Application to Voltammetric Data

Abstract: A multivariate version of the classical univariate standard addition method is proposed for the analysis of samples generating overlapping signals in the presence of notorious matrix effects.Unlike previous versions based on multivariate calibration by partial least squares (PLS), the proposed strategy takes advantage of a self-modelling methodology: multivariate curve resolution by alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) enhanced with signal shape constraints based on parametric functions. In this way, there is n… Show more

“…Such situations seem also similar in other fields of analytical chemistry from 1990s to nowadays; many papers related to SAM have appeared in environmental chemistry [57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64], food chemistry [65][66][67][68], clinical chemistry [69][70][71] and miscellaneous fields [72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79][80][81]. The validation approaches in non-forensic toxicology fields were also of various types like those of forensic toxicology as listed in Table 1.…”

“…In a recent work, our group has shown that the shape constraint characteristic of voltammetric measurements is a key factor to apply MCR-ALS to multivariate standard addition with no need of second order data. Moreover, the proposed method allows one to simultaneously add all the analytes from the same standard solution, which substantially reduces the number of required measurements, and consequently the total analysis time [69]. Figure 8 summarizes this methodology.…”

“…As for relative quantification, the internal standard method is commonly used in chromatography and spectrometry. 4 Methods of absolute quantification like standard curve and standard addition 5 are most frequently used in analytical chemistry. Therefore, although there are lots of examples of semi-, relative, and absolute quantification in chemistry, their theoretical principles have not been well summarized and demonstrated to students yet.…”
