New approach to calculating the news

Abstract: We consider the problem of finding the gravitational radiation output, or news, within the context of a numerical simulation of a spacetime by means of the null-cone, or characteristic, approach to numerical relativity. We develop a method for computing the news that uses an explicit coordinate transformation to a coordinate system that satisfies the Bondi conditions. The method has been implemented computationally. We present results of applying the method to certain test problems, demonstrating second order … Show more

“…The mathematical theory relating metric quantities at future null infinity, J + , to gravitational radiation, and using the present formalism, is given in [35,38,46]. In the original work of Bondi et al [30], it was possible to assume that the coordinates at J + were such that β = J = 0 there, and in that case the gravitational news takes the very simple form…”

“…While the transformation to Bondi gauge coordinates can be done explicitly [46], in the present code it is done implicitly, leading to an expression for the news in terms of the code metric variables and coordinates. The formula is long and complicated [38] and is not repeated here.…”

“…The scheme is therefore not well suited for the evolution of the actual GW source. Characteristic evolutions, on the other hand, are well adapted to the far-field region of spacetime and can efficiently evolve the metric fields out to J + where it is possible to obtain Ψ 4 (and, hence, h) in a mathematically unambiguous and gauge-invariant way [46,[97][98][99].…”

“…The calculation of the Bondi news function on I + is based on the algorithm developed in [39] with the modifications introduced in [45,46] (an alternative calculation for the news was recently introduced in [66]). Here we present an overview of the algorithm.…”
