New antimicrobial agents: The synthesis of Schiff base polymers containing transition metals and their characterization and applications

Abstract: A new polymeric Schiff base containing formaldehyde and 2-thiobarbituric acid moieties was synthesized by the condensation of a monomeric Schiff base derived from 2-hydroxyacetophenone and hydrazine. Polymer-metal complexes were also synthesized by the reaction of the polymeric Schiff base with Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) acetate. The polymeric Schiff base and its polymer-metal complexes were characterized with magnetic moment measurements, elemental analyses, and spectral techniques (infrared, … Show more

“…17,18 These properties make them important candidate for application in solar cells, 19,20 optoelectronic sensors, 21 photo-luminescent devices, 22 aerospace, 23 packaging materials and antifouling paints. 24 The redox activity of the Schiff base polymers was also reported, therefore they can be employed as redox indicators. 25 The polymer blends are also seeking attention in technological fields during last two decades because of their mechanical properties, which can be altered according to desired application.…”

“…18 They can act as antimicrobial agents and these are proving interesting, because these are nonvolatile and thermally stable and cannot penetrate through human skin. 19,20 They could protect losses through skin by volatilization. 21,22 The conjugated polyazomethines indicate fluorescence properties, they can be applied in the manufacture of chemical sensors, photoluminescence devices and light emitting diodes.…”

“…[10][11][12][13] They are used to prepare composite materials having high resistance at high temperatures, thermostablizers, photoresistors, flame resistance materials, and components of electrochemical cells. [14][15][16] The Schiff base polymers demonstrate antimicrobial activity against bacteria, yeast and fungi. 17,18 Thus these can be used for the purification of industrial contaminants from heavy metals and microbiological organisms and are significant for environmental applications.…”
