This study aimed at analysing the phytochemical content and antimicrobial activity of Bridelia ferrugine against selected bacteria. Total saponin, alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids and total anthraquinone contents were evaluated using spectrophotometric equivalents of the standards. The antibacterial activity of the plant extracts were determined using Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) assays against selected bacteria. The root and stem revealed the presence of the phytochemicals tested except the stem that lacked anthraquinones. In vitro antimicrobial activity of the plant extracts against the gram-positive bacteria tested showed that Bacillus cereus was most susceptible to the plant extract having MIC and MBC of 25 and 50 mg/ml, respectively for the stem-bark and root-bark ethanolic extract, while gram-negative bacteria the plant extracts were most active against Proteus mirabilis with MIC and MBC of 50 and 100 mg/ml, respectively. The aqueous extract was most active against Staphylococcus epidermidis with MIC and MBC of 50 and 100 mg/ml for stem-bark and 25 and 50 mg/ml for root-bark extract. Concentration dependent study showed the plant extracts were either bacteriostatic or bactericidal. Only the stembark aqueous extract showed no primary effect on the control strains. The study confirmed the presence of some phytochemicals which revealed that the plant is of pharmacological importance going by the ability of these phytochemicals to elicit antibacterial activity.

The antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of some cultivars of the nopal cactus have not been determined. In this study, 8 cultivars of nopal cacti from Mexico were assayed for phenolic content, antioxidant activities, and antimicrobial activities against Campylobacter Jejuni, Vibrio cholera, and Clostridium Perfringens. Plant material was washed, dried, and macerated in methanol. Minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) were determined using the broth microdilution method. Antioxidant activities were quantitatively determined using spectrophotometric methods. The MCBs of the nopal cacti ranged from 1.1 to 12.5 mg/mL for c. jejuni, 4.4 to 30 mg/mL for V. cholera, and 0.8 to 16 mg/mL for C. perfringens in the cultivars Cardon Blanco, Real de Catorce, and Jalpa, respectively. High quantities of total phenols and total flavonoids were found in the Jalpa cacti (3.80 mg of gallic acid equivalent GAE/g dry weight [DW] and 36.64 mg of quercetin equivalents [QE]/g DW, respectively). 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activities (RSA) were correlated to bioactive compound contents. The Villanueva cacti had the highest %RSA at 42.31%, and the lowest activity was recorded in Copena V1 at 19.98%. In conclusion, we found that some of the 8 cactus pear cultivars studied may be used for their antioxidant compounds or antimicrobials to control or prevent the contamination of foods.

Background and Objective Metal‐based dental restorations with a subgingival outline may enhance plaque accumulation and bacterial colonization. This study aimed to investigate whether metal‐based restorations influence the composition of subgingival microbiome. Material and Methods Per subject one site with a metal‐based restoration and one contra‐lateral site without a restoration were selected on basis of radiographic bone loss ≤2 mm, restoration outline at sulcus level/subgingivally, pocket depth ≤4 mm, and no root canal treatments. Subgingival samples were collected with sterile paper‐points, and microbial profiles were obtained by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Restorations were sampled with an Arkansas‐stone and the metal composition was determined using energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy. Results A total of 22 sites from 11 subjects were included. No significant differences for the clinical parameters were found between the restored and unrestored sites. The average age of the restorations was 14.9 ± 7.1 years. Firmicutes was the most prevalent phylum at the restored sites (32% vs 20% of the reads of the unrestored sites, P = 0.016), and Actinobacteria at the unrestored sites (33% vs 18% of the reads of the restored sites, P = 0.01). Overall, sequences clustered into 573 operational taxonomic units (OTUs). Species richness of the restored sites was significantly higher than species richness of the unrestored sites (117 ± 32 and 96 ± 20 OTUs, respectively, P = 0.013). No associations between the metal composition and bacterial profiles were found. Conclusion This study shows that metal‐based restorations may enhance colonization of Firmicutes and the neighboring pocket may harbor more diverse microbial communities.
