New Antibacterial Therapeutics and Strategies

Abstract: Studies on new antibacterial therapeutics and strategies are currently being conducted in many microbiological, pharmaceutical and biochemical laboratories. The antibacterial activity of plant-derived compounds as well as silver and gold nanoparticles is the subject of this minireview. The application of photodynamic therapy is also discussed.

“…The tannins content as observed in the study especially in the ethanolic extracts justify the use of the plant in traditional medicine for the treatment of diarrhoea. Anthraquinones have been found to have wide range of antibacterial (also anti-mycobacterial) property resulting in loss of function and inactivation of bacterial proteins, cell wall, polypeptides, adhesins and membrane bound organelles with resultant death of the bacterial cell (Kurek et al, 2011).…”

“…Several plant polyphenols possess antibacterial activities (Kurek and others ). In fact, phenolic acids such as gallic acid, coumaric acid, 3,4‐dihydroxy‐benzoic acid, 4‐hydroxy benzoic acid, ferulic acid, and salicylic acid and flavonoids like iso‐quercitrin, isorharmnetin 3‐O‐glucoside, nicotiflorin, rutin, narcissin, have been reported in the cladodes of Opuntia varieties, and many of these exhibited antimicrobial activity (Guevara‐Figueroa and others ).…”

“…11 On the other hand, metals such as silver (Ag), copper (Cu), gold (Au), and zinc (Zn) have antimicrobial properties and are used for centuries in dentistry and general health care. [12][13][14] Gingivitis is the first sign of inflammation of periodontal tissues.…”
