Neutrophils Induced Licensing of Natural Killer Cells

Abstract: Natural killer (NK) cells acquire effector function through a licensing process and exert anti-leukemia/tumor effect. However, there is no means to promote a licensing effect of allogeneic NK cells other than cytomegalovirus reactivation-induced licensing in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in human. In mice, a licensing process is mediated by Ly49 receptors which recognize self-major histocompatibility complex class I. The distribution of four Ly49 receptors showed similar pattern in congeni… Show more

“…It is well known that the number and functions of NK cells depend on the cytokine environment and on cell-to-cell interactions with myeloid cells such as monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils (22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(27). We, therefore, monitored myeloid populations in the lung in response to metastasis induction (gating strategies in Supplementary Fig.…”

“…Besides producing cytokines and chemokines, another novel and emerging aspect consists in the ability of neutrophils to interact with, and modulate the activity of different leukocyte types in vitro and in vivo. Recent studiesalso highlight a new role for neutrophils as nonredundant regulatory cells ensuring the terminal maturation of NK cells in both humans and mice [58][59][60] . Future studies in natural hosts will help to decipher to which extent these functions play a role in the pathogenic outcome of HIV/SIV infections.…”

“… showed that Genista mice, which lack mature neutrophils, displayed a normal Ly49 repertoire despite an alteration in NK cell function. Recent data provide an opposing view . Accessory cells likely influence NK cell development and maturation by means of cytokines, in particular IL‐15 .…”
