Neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio predicts recurrence after radiofrequency ablation in hepatitis B virus infection

Abstract: Recurrence of HCC after RFA was strongly associated with survival. NLR is useful as a predictive marker of recurrence, especially in HBV-HCC patients.

“…NLR, a biomarker of tumor inflammation and host immunity, was associated with increased mortality in cancer (35).In agreement with the results of our study Chen et al(36) , Dan et al(37) and Tajiriet al (38) reported that high postoperative NLR is associated with high recurrence rate of HCC after RFA.…”

“…Similarly, a NLR >2.5 prior to interventional locoregional radiotherapy with radiofrequency ablation for HCC was significantly associated with tumor recurrence in patients infected with HBV (8). Although these previous studies reported prognostic value in NLR following treatment for HBV-related HCC, few examined changes in NLR related to initiation of antiviral treatment.…”

“…Several studies had established that a higher NLR was independently associated with early mortality and poor clinical outcomes of HBV-related decompensated liver cirrhosis, resectable and advanced HCC after treatments (radical hepatectomy, radiofrequency ablation, transarterial chemoin vivo 31 embolization, liver transplantation) (31)(32)(33)(34)(35). Our recent analysis revealed that peginterferon was superior to nucleos(t)ide in reducing HCC risk (9), and immunomo-dulation may play a significant role.…”
