Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and mean platelet volume as predictive factors for liver fibrosis and steatosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B

Abstract: Objective. Evaluation of the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and mean platelet volume as predictive factors for liver fibrosis and steatosis in HBV patients qualified for antiviral treatment. Materials and method. The study comprised 38 CHB patients who had commenced antiviral treatment, and 20 healthy volunteers who constituted the clinical control group. All patients had their blood count taken and underwent hepatic assessment using transient elastography with CAP (controlled attenuation parameter). Results. It … Show more

“…In non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, NLR was associated with inflammatory activity and different histological fibrotic grades[ 11 - 15 ]. In chronic viral hepatitis B and C, NLR predicted response to anti-viral therapy[ 16 - 21 ]. In cirrhosis, NLR was associated with worse outcomes[ 22 - 27 ].…”

“…Insignificant and significant fibrosis patients had similar Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) values ( P = 0.859). The study found insignificant difference in NLR values between cirrhosis and non-cirrhosis patients ( P = 0.160) [32]. The hepatic activity index (HAI) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) showed an inverse link with a correlation coefficient (r:-.218 and a P = 0.041) [33].…”

“…A systematic review has analyzed the correlation between the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and liver fibrosis, which found that a high NLR was related to mild progression of liver fibrosis in patients infected by HBV, but the patients with chronic HCV infection showed no significant relationships. Generally, the relative number of neutrophils in blood could be associated with the liver fibrosis stage and used as a biomarker in cirrhotic patients ( Peng et al, 2018 ; Pokora Rodak et al, 2018 ). For mechanism, the previous study found that neutrophils in the liver could induce the proinflammatory effect of macrophages by upregulating miR-223 and downregulating its targeted gene, NLRP3, finally contributing to the spontaneous resolution of liver fibrosis ( Calvente et al, 2019 ).…”
