Neutrophil CD64 as a Diagnostic Marker of Sepsis in Neonates

Abstract: CD64 expression on neutrophils increases significantly in neonates with sepsis and can be considered a useful diagnostic marker for early diagnosis of neonatal infection as a single determination compared with other inflammatory markers.

“…Thus, the expression level of CD64 could be used as a basis to determine bacterial infections in patients with prostatitis. These findings coincide with previous reports . Thus, CD64 expression highly correlated with bacterial infection, and a high CD64 level in the prostate liquid could effectively suggest the possibility of bacterial infection.…”

“…FcγR I (CD64) is a 72‐kDa transmembrane glycoprotein, the highest affinity receptor of immunoglobulin (IgG), and a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily . CD64 is primarily distributed on the surfaces of monocytes, macrophages, and activated neutrophils in the peripheral blood; it is involved in the phagocytosis of immune cells toward bacteria and immune complexes and plays an important role in the body's defense functions …”

“…1x10 4 BM cells were seeded in MethoCult TM medium (StemCell Technologies) containing 50 ng/mL murine rSCF, 10 ng/mL murine rIL-3, and 10 ng/mL murine rIL-6 into 6-well plates. Cells were incubated at 37°C for seven days and colonies per well were counted.…”

“…1 A fine-tuned regulation of the number of circulating neutrophils together with local control of neutrophil activation is important to balance pathogen defense, inflammation and tissue integrity. Imbalances are associated with infection and a number of inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, 2 acute myocardial infarction, 3 sepsis, 4 or cancer. 5 In patients suffering from these diseases, TIMP-1 plasma levels are often elevated, and correlate with poor prognosis.…”
