Neutron Response Function for BC-523A Scintillation Detector in the Energy Range 0.5 MeV to 20 MeV

Abstract: In the paper, the physical model of a doped scintilator is described. The Monte Carlo type code NEU-7 [Cvachovec, Cvachovec, and Tajovsky, Nucl. Math. Inst. Phys. Res. A, Vol. 476, 2002, pp. 200–202], which was created for a NE-213 and stilben type scintillators containing also hydrogen and carbon only, was extended for scintillators containing 10B, 11B, and O also. The modified NEU-7 code is called NEUB-7, and with it the response function for scintilator BC-523A doped with 4.41 % 10B was calcu… Show more

“…The deconvolution of neutron spectra was done with the Expectation Maximization algorithm. Derivation of EM algorithm can be found in [3]. The EM algorithm is an iterative convergent algorithm that produces non-negative results given non-negative detector response function and apparatus spectrum (obtained from neutron pulses).…”

“…The stilbene scintillator was connected to the NGA-01 spectrometer. Gamma response was separated using pulse shape discrimination and the gamma spectrum was obtained using deconvolution using the Maximum Likelihood Estimation [10]. The 6.128 MeV gammas originate not only from inelastic scattering on 16 O but during the disintegration of 16 N as well.…”

“…The detector response functions for the neutrons and photons were calculated by Monte Carlo method using codeNEU-7 [3], [4] taking into account the crystal anisotropy and considering interactions: elastic neutron scattering with hydrogen and carbon, inelastic scattering with carbon and reactions (n,α) and (n, 3α, n') with carbon in the energy range of (0.5; 20) MeV.…”
