Neutron diffraction and magnetization studies of pseudoternary HoRh2-xPdxSi2 solid solutions (0$\leq$x<2)

Abstract: Neutron powder diffraction and magnetometric studies of the HoRh2-xPdxSi2 series of solid solutions (x = 0, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5, 1.8) are reported. The intermetallics investigated crystallize in the body-centred-tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure (space group I4/mmm). All the samples order antiferromagnetically at low temperatures. For low values of the dilution parameter x a simple collinear antiferromagnetic structure of the AFI type is stable. Below TN the magnetic moments are parallel to the c-axis and … Show more

“…This result is in agreement with the change in the values of the B 0 2 parameter of the crystal electric field which is large and negative (−8.33 K) for TbRu 2 Si 2 and small and negative (−0.18 K) for TbPd 2 Si 2 [9]. Similar change in the magnetic order is observed in the isostructural HoRh 1−x Pd x Si 2 system [10]. In the LSW II-type structure the values of the k x component of the propagation vector increase with increasing x.…”

“…In case of HoRh 2 Si 2 the next order CEF parameter ( B 4 0 ) promotes a tilting by 45°. Competition of both CEF parameters leads to the observed tilting angle of about 28°. , …”

“…Competition of both CEF parameters leads to the observed tilting angle of about 28°. 44,48 We will show now that this peculiar out-of-plane bulk magnetic order in HoRh 2 Si 2 gives rise to surface magnetic and electronic properties very different to those of its in-plane ordered homologues, like EuRh 2 Si 2 or GdRh 2 Si 2 . Figure 1 shows ARPES intensity maps taken along the X̅ −M̅ −X̅ direction of the surface Brillouin zone (SBZ) of the Siterminated HoRh 2 Si 2 and EuRh 2 Si 2 systems for both the PM and AFM phases.…”

“…The next AFM system with similar properties is HoRh 2 Si 2 , which also demonstrates temperature-dependent canting of 4f moments in the bulk. Below T N = 29 K and down to 11 K, the 4f moments are oriented along the c axis, while when T is further lowered, the moments gradually deviate from the c axis with the canting angle up to 33°. , Figure e shows the PE spectra taken from both terminations for the PM phase of HoRh 2 Si 2 at 30 K. In remarkable contrast to the presented above materials, the spectrum for rare-earth termination does not resemble the model spectra neither for maximal nor for minimal | M J |. Instead, it indicates that the ground state has a middle value of M J = 4.…”
