Neutrino flux predictions for the NuMI beam

Abstract: Knowledge of the neutrino flux produced by the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beamline is essential to the neutrino oscillation and neutrino interaction measurements of the MINERvA, MINOS+, NOvA and MicroBooNE experiments at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. We have produced a flux prediction which uses all available and relevant hadron production data, incorporating measurements of particle production off of thin targets as well as measurements of particle yields from a spare NuMI target exposed t… Show more

“…As for T2K, the simulation of NOνA employs a detailed description of the beamline based on GEANT4. Again, the computed neutrino flux is corrected according to constraints on the hadron spectrum from thin-target hadroproduction data using the PPFX tools developed for the NuMI beam by the MINERvA collaboration [74]. Neutrino interactions in the detector are simulated with GENIE [21] while the detector response is simulated with GEANT4.…”

“…Any complete assessment of Geant4 uncertainties would need to include uncertainties in the cross sections -11 - themselves, not just final state models. In fact, the interaction cross sections are among the most important sources of uncertainty in some high energy physics measurements, and experiments have developed event weighting mechanisms to assess their impact [1,4].…”

“…The simulation of the NuMI flux and its uncertainties are described in detail in [69]. Uncertainties in the antineutrino flux arise primarily from uncertainties in hadron production rates and in parameters that control the alignment of the NuMI focusing system, such as the position of the focusing horns.…”
