Neutral modelanalysis of patterns of marine benthic species diversity

Abstract: Caswell (1976) proposed a neutral model which calculates a theoretical diversity for a sample of a given number of individuals and species assuming no biological interactions between species. Disagreement with the neutral model predictions have been suggested as a method of detecting disturbance or stress. To test these theoretical considerations, 98 samples of marine benthic organisms were subjected to neutral model analysis. Deviation from the predicted diversity was generally found to be negative -less dive… Show more

“…Several factors have been proposed to account for observed vertical patterns including species interaction, differential response to geochemical properties of the sediment, resource partitioning or active avoidance of predation (e.g. Jensen, 1981Jensen, , 1987Joint et al, 1982;Bouwman et al, 1984;Platt & Lambshead, 1985;Ó lafsson, 1992;Giere, 1993;Hendelberg & Jensen, 1993;Soetaert et al, 1994;Modig & Ó lafsson, 1998;Steyaert et al, 1999;Wetzel et al, 2002).…”

“…Recently the non-equilibrium diversity theories of Connell (1978) and Huston (1979) have been used to explain variations in species diversity in meiofaunal assemblages (Platt & Lambshead 1985, Warwick et al 1986). The hypothesis predicts that under low frequency and intensity of disturbance diversity is low due to competitive exclusion, while intermediate disturbance yields high diversity by preventing competition leading to exclusion of species.…”

“…The community data were analysed for signs of stress using 3 separate methods: abundance biomass comparisons (ABC) (Warwick 1986), log-normal plots (Gray & Pearson 1982) and the Ewens-Caswell neutral model (Platt & Lambshead 1985, Lambshead & Platt 1988. Three methods were used as recent studies have suggested that interpretations based on more than 1 method may be more reliable, as each has been demonstrated to provide equivocal results under certain conditions (Dauer et al 1993, Warwick 1993, Smith 1994, Warwick & Clarke 1994.…”
