“…The existence of a sodium-dependent NA transporter in SH-SY5Y cells was demonstrated by the high sodium dependency of [ 3H]NA uptake and the inhibition of that uptake by the specific inhibitor desmethylimipramine (1 pM). Other brain preparations such as synaptosomes and primary cultures give similar results, with typical K. values of 0 .1-2 vM and VmaX values of 1-20 pmol/min/mg of cell protein (reviewed by Hendley, 1984;Kimelberg, 1986) . These values compare very favourably with the Km value of 0 .6 j,M and VmaX value of 17 .8 pmoUmin/mg of protein for SH-SY5Y cells.…”

“…30 In the meantime the museum had been open "without charge, to visitors of all classes, between dawn and dusk on weekdays". 31 And visitors had come in numbers that exceeded all expectations. In Hendley's final and valedictory museum report to the darbar, written in 1898 on the eve of his departure from Jaipur, he records that the average annual attendance exceeded a quarter of a million people, and that the total for the eleven years since its opening was therefore not far short of three million visitors.…”

“…The energy for the transport of NE is derived from the co-transport of Na' down its concentration A TP STIMULATES NOREPINEPHRINE UPTAKE 1513 gradient. The Na+ gradient in turn is maintained by the activity of an intracellular, membrane-bound Na+, K+-ATPase (for review, see Hendley, 1984).…”
