“…including visceral NT-secreting neuroendocrine tumors (neurotensinomas) (Calhoun et al, 2003), gastrointestinal motor abnormalities (Bardella et al, 2000), inflammatory dermatological disorders (Vasiadi et al, 2012(Vasiadi et al, , 2013, neurological disorders (Schimpff et al, 2001), psychiatric disease (Angelidou et al, 2010), and acute sympatho-adrenal activation in shock (Piliponsky et al, 2008) or neonatal asphyxia (Liu et al, 2007). Furthermore, high blood plasma levels of NT precursor (proneurotensin) have been revealed in morbidly obese subjects after bariatric surgery (ChristCrain et al 2006) or gastric bypass operation (Holdstock et al, 2008).…”

“…In addition to IgE-mediated allergic reactions, MCs also participate in innate and acquired immunity Sismanopoulos et al, 2012), autoimmunity (Rottem and Mekori, 2005), and inflammation (Theoharides et al, 2007). In particular, MCs play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of AD (Vasiadi et al, 2013), psoriasis , rheumatoid arthritis (Askenase, 2003;Kritas et al, 2013), multiple sclerosis (MS) (Karagkouni et al, 2013), and autism (Theoharides, 2013), possibly through the "selective" release of mediators (Theoharides et al, 2007).…”

“…The only histological abnormalities considered acceptable were mild superficial chronic gastritis or mild reflux esophagitis, outcomes that were also found in some CD patients (2/9). Moreover, in order to avoid any confounding factors, all subjects enrolled in this study were previously selected according to medical history to exclude any allergic, inflammatory, neoplastic, or neurologic conditions, in light of the possible involvement of NT in these diseases [27,28].…”
