Sports activities associated with repetitive cranial trauma have become a fad and are popular in gyms and even among children. It is important to consistently characterize the consequences of such sports activities in order to better advise society on the real risks to the central nervous system. We present the case of a former boxer reporting cognitive and behavioral symptoms that began six years after his retirement as a boxer, evolving progressively with parkinsonian and cerebellar features suggestive of probable chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Using our case as a paradigm, we extended the range of differential diagnosis of CTE, including corticobasal degeneration, multiple system atrophy, vitamin B12 deficiency, neurosyphilis, frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Historical ethnobotanical studies of medicinal plants reveal important information about traditional practices of human groups and infl uence current understanding of the use of plants. Th e present article describes the ethnopharmacology of mururé (Brosimum acutifolium) since the XVIII century for the treatment of syphilis and correlates past and present therapeutic use. Th is information contributes to the appreciation of historical records in the contemporary use of natural products. Th e analysis of documental records is important for comparing information available overtime about the medicinal use and application of specifi c species. Th e present research was based on the analysis of a Jesuit work and other complementary documents. Th e medicinal eff ect of mururé is attributed to its latex, and dosage and adverse reactions are described. Historical documents stand out as valuable assets for pharmaceutical technology because they allow comparisons to be made between past and present uses of species as curative agents.

RESUMOIntrodução: O conhecimento do perfil epidemiológico de portadores de sífilis adquirida e da situação da notificação dessa doença é importante para a população, para os profissionais da saúde, e para as políticas públicas. As notificações/investigações desse agravo sofrem influência pela quantidade, qualidade, confiabilidade e inconsistências dos dados. Objetivo: elaborar mapas temáticos das notificações/investigações de sífilis adquirida de uma Superintendência Regional de Saúde do Sul de Minas Gerais no período de janeiro de 2010 a junho de 2017. Metodologia: trata-se de um estudo quantitativo, descritivo e transversal, em que foram incluídos todos os casos de sífilis adquirida notificados/investigados na referida Superintendência Regional, acompanhados da ficha de investigação, no período de janeiro de 2010 a junho de 2017. A pesquisa foi aprovada pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa, conforme Parecer número 2.197.263. Para a coleta de dados sociodemográficos e clínicos, foi utilizado um instrumento, elaborado pelos pesquisadores, baseado na ficha de investigação da sífilis. Após a coleta, foi utilizado o software ArcGis, versão 10.5 para a elaboração dos mapas temáticos. Resultados: observou-se maior frequência de casos confirmados de sífilis adquirida em indivíduos na faixa etária de 20 a 35 anos; do sexo masculino; com escolaridade ensino médio completo, e residentes em zona urbana. Conclusão: o conhecimento do perfil epidemiológico da doença e a confiabilidade das notificações são primordiais para o conhecimento da real situação dessa doença, e os mapas temáticos colaboram para uma melhor visualização do cenário epidemiológico.
