Neuropsychological Functioning in Preterm-Born Twins and Singletons at Preschool Age

Abstract: The modest twin disadvantage on language and visual processing tasks at preschool-age could not be readily attributable to socioeconomic or perinatal variables. The possibility of biological or social twinning-related phenomena as mechanisms underlying the observed performance gaps are discussed. (JINS, 2016, 22, 865-877).

“…We examined the remaining eight studies and four of them were prospective follow-up studies (Bodeau-Livinec et al, 2013; de Zeeuw et al, 2012; Eras et al, 2013; Gnanendran et al, 2015), three were cross-sectional studies (Hjern et al, 2012; Hur & Lynn, 2013; Raz et al, 2016), while one was a randomized controlled trial (Manuck et al, 2014).…”

“…This study showed that Swedish male and female twins had slightly higher mean grade points in primary school compared with singletons, while male twins had slightly lower scores on IQ tests at military conscription at 18–19 years of age. The studies by Eras et al (2013) and Raz et al (2016) were ranked 5th and 6th, respectively. Eras et al conducted a prospective study of pre-term infants (≤32 weeks gestational age) and examined them for moderate or severe cerebral palsy, and severe bilateral hearing loss or bilateral blindness at 12 to 18 months of age They also used the MDI and PDI scores to determine neurodevelopment, but did not find significant differences between singletons and twins in MDI or PDI.…”

“…Thus, for example, lower oxygen saturation in cerebral tissue is related to worse cognitive outcomes in preterm children [41]. Regarding multiple or single pregnancy, preterm twins seem to show lower language and visual processing outcomes than preterm single births [42]. Based on our results and scientific evidence, it appears that the factors related to greater neuropsychological dysfunction, mainly to visuospatial and spatial orientation skills, are surgical procedures, intra-periventricular hemorrhages, and multiple pregnancies.…”

“…The developmental trajectory of twins was investigated either in term-born twins or preterm (PT) born ones, with the hypothesis that multiplicity would account for a unique portion of developmental outcome variance. 1 Twins represent 10% of PT birth in the United States (<37 weeks), more than 50% of twins birth are born PT, 2,3 and 11% of twins are PT (<32 weeks). 4 Moreover, the occurrence of multiple gestations is increasing since the advent of various artificial reproductive technologies, [5][6][7] and they remain the most common complication of assisted reproductive technology.…”
