Neuroprotective Effects of Quercetin in Pediatric Neurological Diseases

Abstract: Oxidative stress is a crucial event underlying several pediatric neurological diseases, such as the central nervous system (CNS) tumors, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Neuroprotective therapy with natural compounds used as antioxidants has the potential to delay, ameliorate or prevent several pediatric neurological diseases. The present review provides an overview of the most recent research outcomes following quercetin treatment for CNS tumors, ASD and ADHD… Show more

“…ROS induce protein oxidation (Salehi et al, 2019a), lipid peroxidation (Salehi et al, 2019c), and neurons and glial cells leading to the death of neurons (Gilgun-Sherki et al, 2001). Moreover, aging established neuronal damage mediated by ROS cause neurodegeneration (Uttara et al, 2009;Alvarez-Arellano et al, 2020).…”

“…Flavonoids belong to a large group of natural polyphenolic phytochemicals with several subclasses and have shown beneficial effects, such as antioxidantantioxidant activity in several neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders, as well as anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, and cardioprotective activity. Quercetin is a flavonoid com-pound present in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables and has been shown to exert therapeutic effects [100]. The oral administration of quercetin to STZ-induced diabetic rats resulted in a decrease in blood glucose, plasma TBARS, and hydroperoxides levels.…”

“…Miq., Coriandrum sativum L. and Capparis spinosa L. It is one of the most consumed flavonoids in people's daily diet (Alvarez-Arellano et al, 2020). Quercetin has a variety of biological activities, such as antioxidant and scavenging free radicals (Wang et al, 2021e), anti-cancer, anti-aging (Zhu et al, 2015), anti-inflammatory (Rauf et al, 2018;Cui et al, 2019) anti-virus and immune regulation (Zhu et al, 2015;Alvarez-Arellano et al, 2020). It has a very important clinical significance in the treatment of bacterial infection, viral infection, hyperlipidemia and immune system diseases, especially for those caused by increased oxidative stress Cell damage and even mitochondrial dysfunction related diseases have potential protein synthesis (Nagata et al, 2004).…”
