Neuroprotective Effects of a Cholecystokinin Analogue in the 1-Methyl-4-Phenyl-1,2,3,6-Tetrahydropyridine Parkinson’s Disease Mouse Model

Abstract: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been identified as a risk factor for PD. Drugs originally developed for T2DM treatment such as liraglutide have shown neuroprotective effects in mouse models of PD. Cholecystokinin (CCK) is a peptide hormone with growth factor properties. Here, we demonstrate the neuroprotective effects of the (pGLu)-(Gln)-CCK8 analogue in an acute PD mouse model induced by 1-Methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). A… Show more

“…The residence time in the target quadrant and the number of times the mice crossed the platform within 60 s were recorded. In the open field experiment ( Zhang et al, 2022 ), the mice moved freely for 5 min, and the total movement distance and the number of grooming were recorded. In the Y-maze experiment ( Kraeuter et al, 2019 ), the mice were placed at the intersection of three maze arms in turn and moved freely for 5 min.…”

“…CCK hormone, highly expressed in the hippocampus, has been suggested to enhance healthy mnemonic functions and serves as a biomarker of cognitive and neuronal integrity in neurodegenerative disease (Plagman et al, 2019;Zhang et al, 2022). There have been few studies specifically examining CCK INs, relative to their extensive study in non-pathologic settings, and these are primarily limited to rodent models featuring or exposed to amyloid pathology.…”

“…Mice were placed in the center of the apparatus. Te number of line crossings and rearing was recorded after 5 min (Smart 3.0, RWD Life Technology, Shenzhen, China), see [41][42][43] for details. Te apparatus was cleaned with 75% alcohol and dried between trials.…”
