Neuroprotective effect of Ziziphi Spinosae Semen on rats with p-chlorophenylalanine-induced insomnia via activation of GABAA receptor

Abstract: Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa (Bunge) Hu ex H.F.Chow [Rhamnaceae; Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (ZSS)] has attracted extensive attention as the first choice of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of insomnia. However, recent studies on the sleep-improving mechanism of ZSS have mainly focused on the role of single components. Thus, to further reveal the potential mechanism of ZSS, an assessment of its multiple constituents is necessary. In this study, ZSS extract (ZSSE) was obtained from ZSS via detailed mode… Show more

“…Down‐regulation of its level helps to improve sleep. [ 82 ] Elevated amino acid levels in brown fat during SD regulate energy metabolism and immune response. In a state of high metabolism, SD mice ate more food but lost weight in our study.…”

“…The embryo and the colloid also had available amino acids, suggesting that processed by-products had a high utilisation value. Glutamic acid and alanine were the highest among the free amino acids, which can synergistically produce umami and sweetness for D. rubrovalvata (Xiao et al 2022;Yang et al 2016). They are important substances involved in various physiological activities (Katsutaka et al 2023), which can not only enrich the flavour but also provide support for expanding the research of functional food.…”

“…In patients with primary insomnia, the average reduction in the brain GABA levels was 30%. The possible mechanism involves the regulation of the expression levels of GABA receptor subunit α-1 (GABA ARα1) and GABA acid receptor subunit γ2 (GABAARγ2) receptors in the hypothalamus and hippocampus [ 146 ]. After 24 h of REM SD, learning memory decreased and the Glu levels increased in the hippocampus of rats.…”
