Neuroprotective Effect of Buyang Huanwu Decoction on Rat Ischemic/Reperfusion Brain Damage by Promoting Migration of Neural Precursor Cells

Abstract: Buyang Huanwu Decoction (BYHWD) is a classic formula widely used for treating stroke-induced disability, the highest morbidity of neurological disorders in China. However, the mechanism of its neuroprotection has not been fully clarified. Previous reports indicated that BYHWD may promote growth and differentiation of neural precursor cells (NPCs). The present study focused on the effects of BYHWD on migration of NPCs in rats with middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Rats were treated with different doses o… Show more

“…However, similar inhibition was not observed in CS-treated senescent HAVSMCs. Other beneficial effects of BYHWD appear to promote the migration of neural precursor cells to ischemic brain areas, thus facilitating its neuroprotective effect (39). Under this condition, cellular migration is a nonpathogenic process for tissue repair in response to ischemic injury, which is different than the age-increased pathological process.…”

“…Briefly, brains were quickly removed 24 h after MCAO. TTC staining was performed to measure the infarct volume [ 23 ]. Neurological deficit of the experimental animals was assessed according to Longa's method as reported previously [ 24 ].…”

“…Buyang Huanwu Decoction (BYHWD) could markedly facilitated stem cell migration by increasing the expression of neurotrophic factors, such as stromal cell-derived factor-1, vascular endothelial growth factor, reelin, and BDNF in the ipsilateral infarct area after MCAO [143] .…”
