Neurophysiological and neurochemical alterations during electrical stimulation of human caudate nucleus

Abstract: Lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) norepinephrine (NE) concentrations were preoperatively determined in five patients using a radioenzymatic assay technique. Stereotaxic thalamotomy was performed using depth coagulating electrodes with stimulating points at 5.0-mm intervals along the shaft. No significant alterations in prestimulation lumbar CSF NE levels were noted 12 days after electrode installation. Stimulating points within the caudate nucleus were anatomically localized using ventricular landmarks and sti… Show more

“…Van Buren [8] commented that stimulation to the head of the caudate nucleus would cause an interference of change in psychic process; Wood [10] has recently supported the opinion of Van Buren. Our observations may support Van Buren's opinion, but in detail there are some differ ences between them.…”

“…The caudate stimulation study [12] included 1 patient with intractable thalamic pain following evacuation of a left thalamocapsular hematoma, 1 patient with right hemiparkinsonism, 1 patient with spasmodic torticollis and retrocollis, and 2 patients with dystonia musculorum deformans ( Table 2). Their mean age was 38 & 8 gears.…”
