Neuropeptides and neurohormones in immune, inflammatory and cellular responses to ultraviolet radiation

Abstract: Humans are exposed to varying amounts of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) through sunlight. UVR penetrates into human skin leading to release of neuropeptides, neurotransmitters and neuroendocrine hormones. These messengers released from local sensory nerves, keratinocytes, Langerhans cells (LCs), mast cells, melanocytes and endothelial cells (ECs) modulate local and systemic immune responses, mediate inflammation and promote differing cell biologic effects. In this review, we will focus on both animal and human st… Show more

“…In our laboratory, the bystander signal mostly involved UVA photon emissions wherever LDIR interacted with cells. There is extensive literature that UV interacts with the immune system, particularly Langerhans cells (Ullrich and Byrne 2012;Moattari and Granstein 2021). While this is outside the scope of this paper, it is interesting to consider that UVA biophotons generated due to ionizing radiation interaction in deep tissues could be a mechanism leading to an ionizing radiation-induced immune response.…”

“…Additionally, the SP-induced Ca2+ influx affects the degranulation mechanism of MCs. Furthermore, SP induces histamine release from MCs ( 71 , 72 ) ( Figure 2A ). McCary reported that SP can downregulate the expression of the high-affinity IgE receptor (FcεRI) mRNA and protein on the surface of human MCs, which in turn limits MC activation ( 73 ).…”

“…consequences. Dopamine detox protocols found online usually encompass a selection of any or all of the following abstinences: foods high in sugar, fat and glutamate, impulse buying, unscheduled media consumption, and other, similar behaviors or other substances, some of them with direct detrimental health effects (nicotine 6 or UV tanning 7 ), but all of them blamed for creating short-lived feelings of pleasure, followed by cravings or even withdrawal symptoms. Systematic, peer-reviewed data are, to the best of our knowledge, lacking, while sporadic evidence is out there, so it may be worth taking a look at what's new in physiological monoamine research.…”
