Neuropathologic Findings in Cetaceans Stranded in Italy (2002–14)

Abstract: We summarized the neuropathologic findings in 60 cetaceans stranded along the Italian coastline from 2002 to 2014. The following neuropathologic changes were detected in 45% (27/60) of animals: nonsuppurative meningo-encephalitides (30%, 18/60), nonspecific lesions (12%, 7/60), suppurative encephalitis (2%, 1/60), and neoplasm (2%, 1/60). No histologic lesions were found in 47% (28/60) of the specimens. Five (8%, 5/60) samples were unsuitable for analysis. Analysis with PCR detected Brucella spp., morbilliviru… Show more

“…For instance, some studies reported only bacterial infections [ 85 ], and others considered viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic processes altogether [ 4 ]. Nonetheless, when most studies from other geographical areas are scrutinized our data show similar or higher prevalence of infectious disease [ 4 , 12 , 79 , 86 , 87 , 88 , 89 , 90 , 91 , 92 , 93 , 94 , 95 , 96 , 97 , 98 , 99 , 100 , 101 , 102 , 103 , 104 , 105 , 106 , 107 , 108 , 109 ].…”

“…A glioblastoma multiforme was observed in an adult male Atlantic spotted dolphin [ 29 ]. CNS neoplasia is rare in cetaceans [ 75 , 76 , 77 , 78 , 79 , 80 , 81 ]. A live-stranded adult male pigmy sperm whale had CNS pathology suggestive of spongy myelinopathy with features resembling those observed in ammonia toxicity, endogenous metabolic toxicity (hepatic and renal encephalopathy), mitochondrial and idiopathic encephalopathies [ 82 ].…”

“…Endoparasites were preserved in 70% alcohol for microscopic identification, according to established morphological characteristics [45,46]. Coronal sections from different brain regions (telencephalon, diencephalon, mesencephalon, pons, cerebellum, medulla) [47], as well as from all major organs, were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin, embedded in paraffin, sectioned at 4 μm, stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and finally examined under a light microscope.…”

“…Infectious and inflammatory processes are among the most common causes of central nervous system involvement in stranded cetaceans (1)(2)(3). Meningoencephalitis of known infectious etiology can be caused by either bacteria, fungi, viruses, or protozoans (4).…”
