Neuronvisio: A Graphical User Interface with 3D Capabilities for NEURON

Abstract: The NEURON simulation environment is a commonly used tool to perform electrical simulation of neurons and neuronal networks. The NEURON User Interface, based on the now discontinued InterViews library, provides some limited facilities to explore models and to plot their simulation results. Other limitations include the inability to generate a three-dimensional visualization, no standard mean to save the results of simulations, or to store the model geometry within the results. Neuronvisio () aims to address th… Show more

“…There are other simulation management resources available, some of which have overlapping functionality with SimTracker, including NeuroConstruct (Gleeson et al, 2007), Net-PyNE (http://www.neurosimlab.org/netpyne/), Lancet (Stevens et al, 2013), NeuroTools (https://github.com/NeuralEnsemble/NeuroTools), NeuronVisio (Mattioni et al, 2012), and Sumatra (Davison, 2012). However, a combination of properties renders SimTracker unique and a necessary addition to the other available tools.…”

“…The program runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, and on parallel architectures including Beowulf clusters, IBM Blue Gene, and Cray XT3. The popularity of NEURON also encouraged the implementation of ancillary tools such as Neuronvisio, an enhanced interface allowing interactive 3D model representations and saving/reloading of simulation results (Mattioni et al, 2012; michelemattioni.me/neuronvisio). …”
